Our next subject for discussion will be the future of minority languages in Europe. Do you think minority languages in europe are in danger of extinction? Would it really matter if they became extinct? How important is language for the identity of an individual or a community? What should be done to protect Europe's minority languages? Are there not more important things for European governments to spend public money on?
An interesting video clip.I think that language is integral to who we are and how we both perceive and express ourselves. Our mother tongue, in particular, is central in terms of how we relate to our culture and heritage. I guess it's not until it is threatned that we appreciate just how significant it is. Therefore it is understandable that ethnic groups/communities would want to preserve this and they should have the right to do so, while at the same time being ready to participate in the wider community/society by embracing another language where necessary.
As a Catalan, member of a country which has been fighting the last three hundred years to preserve its own language, I would like to show my solidarity with the efforts of the Welsh and Bretons to preserve their languages as well. I find particularly interesting the difference between the behavior of UK and France as regard as the languages. I think that It tell me a lot of the way France and UK see the world, the way they solve their problems, and the quality of his democracy. If I had to live in another country, and I had to choose between UK and France, this report would help me to make a proper decision.

ReplyDeleteRoger, breaking news about tuition fees in Britain. I post below the entrance of the report. Maybe we could discuss it in class.
